London Stock Exchange schedules LSE 24 customer testing ahead of planned 2027 overnight ETP launch
Member firms were due to get access to a test environment for LSE 24, London's planned out-of-hours venue for exchange-traded products, from 19 October. Production is targeted for the second quarter of 2027, subject to FCA approval, and the test service starts with request-for-quote trading only.
London Stock Exchange’s Service Announcement 001/14102026, issued on 14 October, said the Customer Development Service (CDS) for LSE 24 was “expected to be available to customers from Monday 19 October 2026”. The exchange describes the production launch as “planned” for Q2 2027 and “subject to regulatory approval by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA)”. The Early Access Guide also makes the target conditional on successful testing and market readiness. The Midpoint found no FCA publication on LSE 24 as of 27 October.
LSEG’s 21 July announcement gave the launch window as H1 2027, again subject to regulatory approval. The October documents narrow this to the second quarter.
All times below are UK time. Since the clocks went back on 25 October, UK time is GMT.
A separate venue, not longer core hours
According to the service announcement, LSE 24 will run under its own Market Identifier Code, XLOE, with “its own technical configuration”. Firms must request CDS and production access separately from their existing London Stock Exchange access, although Member IDs can stay the same. The Early Access Guide describes a “separate venue and trading system instance” and says core market trading hours and functionality are unchanged. LSEG’s published documents do not say whether LSE 24 will operate as a regulated market or as a multilateral trading facility.
The venue’s FAQ, published in July, says LSE 24 is designed “to complement rather than extend” traditional hours. The service would run from Monday to Friday with a daily pause between 18:30 and 19:00. Because the venue would operate only outside the hours of the exchange’s existing markets, it would at launch be available “from 19:00 to 07:50, and from 17:00 to 18:30, each business day”. LSEG’s July release says trading continues on the Main Market from 08:00 to 16:30. According to the FAQ, the pause is the point at which reference data, instrument eligibility, symbology and corporate action updates are applied.
Instruments
LSE 24 is to start with ETPs already admitted to trading on London Stock Exchange: ETFs, ETCs and ETNs. The Early Access Guide lists 16 ETP trading segments, including lines settling in Euroclear Bank as an ICSD and ETNs restricted to professional investors. It says the production universe “is still being finalised”. New instruments, and instruments affected by events such as splits or consolidations, will trade first on the core market before becoming eligible for LSE 24. Both the guide and the FAQ describe equities as a “natural next step”, subject to client demand, operational readiness and regulatory approval.
The venue also features in LSEG’s tokenisation plans. In a 1 September release on its partnership with Payward, LSEG said that, “subject to regulatory approval, in 2027 the London Stock Exchange intends to list xStocks and start trading them on LSE 24”. The release describes xStocks as 1:1 backed tokenised representations of listed shares.
What the test environment offers
The service announcement sets out three test phases:
- Phase 1 (October 2026): private request for quote (RFQ), both automatic, on a “Winner Takes All” model, and manual
- Phase 2 (Q4 2026): indicative, non-executable quotes
- Phase 3 (Q1 2027): central limit order book trading
LSE lists four core-market functions that will not be available in LSE 24: auctions, including opening and closing auctions; sponsored access; “Executable Quote functionality”; and pegged and offset orders. The guide adds that off-book trade reporting is not supported. In Phase 1 the reference price is the closing price from the core market, CDS trades are not sent for clearing, and an RFQ can last no more than five minutes. RFQs executed either side of midnight in the same session carry the same trade date.
The CDS environment initially runs from 17:00 until 15:00 the following day, with maintenance from 15:00 to 17:00. The guide sets RFQ trading windows of 17:10 to 14:20 the next day from Monday to Thursday, and 17:10 to 23:30 on Fridays. LSE says these test hours differ from production and that a later service announcement will move CDS to production-like hours. It also says final hours, market model, eligible instruments, membership and post-trade arrangements will be communicated ahead of launch.
Connectivity and data
Members can connect through the FIX and Native trading gateways, Drop Copy, Post Trade and Group Ticker Plant (channels B, D and J). They can also use a Model Context Protocol (MCP) interface that works with approved large language models. LSE says the MCP interface “does not replace existing FIX or Native gateway connections”. Documentation for the MCP interface and for a new LSE 24 reference data file is still to follow.
Market data for LSE 24 will carry GTP Source Venue 17, Venue of Execution 26 and MiFID trading mode 4, “Out of Main Session Trading”. Instruments will keep the same Instrument ID, ISIN and TIDM as on the core market, while trader groups and CompIDs are separate. XLOE appears in the LastMkt (30) and MarketID (1301) fields.
Context: US venues move first
LSE 24 is being built as US exchanges prepare for weekday overnight trading. The SEC approved Cboe EDGX’s rule change to trade 23 hours a day, five days a week, on 29 May 2026. Cboe’s overnight FAQ, current as of 23 September, says US exchange overnight trading is expected to begin on 6 December 2026 if regulatory, DTCC and SIP milestones are met. Our coverage of the US timetable and of Cboe’s EDGX session has more detail. Unlike LSE 24, which starts with ETPs and RFQ, the US exchange sessions will trade equities on order books. The FCA’s chief executive has highlighted 24/7 trading and weekend price formation as market-integrity themes.
Why it matters
- Sell side and liquidity providers: Phase 1 is RFQ-only, so early liquidity will depend on market makers responding to requests rather than resting on a book. Desks need separate trader groups and CompIDs for XLOE.
- Buy side: with no auctions or pegged orders, overnight execution in London ETPs will initially be closer to quote-driven price discovery than to continuous on-screen trading. Best-execution monitoring will need to treat XLOE as a separate venue and compare overnight fills with the core-market close.
- Brokers: investors will reach LSE 24 through member firms. Brokers will need to handle the cross-midnight trade date convention and identifiers shared with the core market. The FAQ refers to “agreed overnight clearing and settlement processes”, whose details have not yet been published.
- Data and reporting: a separate MIC on shared instrument identifiers means mapping work for vendors, consolidators and transaction-reporting teams.
