ETF closures: the gap between the last exchange trade and the cash payout runs from three days to 15
Ten closure notices covering 27 funds, filed with the SEC between 28 September and 22 October, set out when creations stop, when exchange trading ends and when holders are paid. The time with no exchange market ranges from three calendar days to 15.
When an ETF closes, the steps generally run in this order, though the filings below show variations:
- The fund stops taking creation orders from authorised participants (APs).
- Exchange trading ends.
- The fund turns its holdings into cash.
- Holders who are still in are paid out at net asset value.
The period between the last exchange trade and the payout is when a holder has no listed market. Ten Rule 497 supplements filed between 28 September and 22 October, covering 27 funds, show how much the length of that period varies. They are not a complete list of closures announced in the period: Simplify and T-REX wound down further funds in separate filings.
23 October is the last trading day for Morgan Stanley’s Calvert US Large-Cap Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Index ETF. Ten ProShares funds, which last traded on 12 October, are ten days into a 15-day window with no exchange market, by our calculation.
The gap, fund by fund
By The Midpoint’s calculation, counting calendar days from the last trading day to the expected liquidation or distribution date given in each filing:
- ProShares, ten funds: 15 days. The last creation day and expected last full trading day are both 12 October, and the expected distribution date is 27 October. The supplement says that from 13 October, shares “will not be traded on their respective exchanges and there will not be a secondary market for the Funds’ shares”.
- Morgan Stanley’s Calvert ETF: 10 days. Creations stop and NYSE Arca trading ends on 23 October, and liquidation is expected “on or about November 2, 2026” (497).
- T-REX 2X Long AFRM: 9 days, from 3 November to 12 November (497).
- Seven days:
- Tradr’s 2X Long CPNG, 19 to 26 October (497);
- Simplify’s NEXT Intangible Core Index ETF, 30 October to 6 November (497);
- Tradr’s two SK hynix funds, 5 to 12 November (497);
- REX’s two funds, with trading halted at the close on 6 November and liquidation after the close on 13 November (497);
- Fidelity’s five funds, including its Metaverse ETF and Real Estate Investment ETF, 12 to 19 November (497).
- iShares iBonds, four 2026 term funds: 3 days. The Dec 2026 Term Muni fund last trades on 1 December and pays on 4 December. The Corporate, Treasury and High Yield and Income funds last trade on 15 December and pay on 18 December.
By our count, 11 of the 27 funds have a seven-day gap, ten have 15 days and four have three.
Who can still redeem
What happens to the primary market during the gap also differs between filings.
By our count, seven of the ten filings stop creation orders at the close of the last trading day; the other three say the fund closes to new investment when exchange trading ends. Morgan Stanley’s says that until the liquidation date, “authorized participants may continue to submit orders to the Fund for the redemption of Creation Units”. The same filing says that once NYSE Arca trading stops there “can be no assurance that there will be a market for the purchase or sale of the Fund’s shares”.
Tradr’s two filings say each fund “will create and redeem creation units through” the closing date, which is also its last trading day. That ties the end of primary-market activity to the end of secondary trading (CPNG, SK hynix).
The iShares term funds take a different approach: the final NAV is struck on the last trading day, not on payout day. Holders still in on the payment date have their shares redeemed “for cash based on the net asset value as of the close of business on December 1, 2026”, and the December 15 funds are priced as of 15 December. The liquidation was approved when each fund was set up: on 12 March 2019 for the muni fund, and on 23 June 2016, 3 December 2019 and 10 June 2020 for the corporate, Treasury and high yield and income funds respectively.
Portfolios move to cash before trading ends
Several filings say the fund stops tracking its strategy while its shares can still be bought and sold.
REX’s IncomeMax Option Strategy ETF “will cease to implement its investment strategy, including its options strategy, as of the close of trading on October 23, 2026”. By our calculation, that is 14 days before trading in its shares is halted, and from then its holdings will consist of cash and cash equivalents. The adviser has voluntarily agreed to waive its management fee from that date (497).
ProShares says its funds will begin liquidating “on or about October 13, 2026” and will not be managed in line with their investment objectives (497). Fidelity says each of its five funds “will likely not be invested in accordance with its investment objective” following board approval of the plan (497).
Morgan Stanley and Fidelity both warn that a holder who waits for the liquidating distribution may receive more or less than a sale on the exchange before the last close would have raised.
Why it matters for desks
- Exit window. In these filings the last exchange print falls between three and 15 calendar days before the payout. After that date, a holder who wants out before liquidation has no listed venue.
- Redemptions during the gap. Whether APs can still redeem after trading stops differs between issuers, and the 497 supplement is where it is stated.
- Trading ahead of the close. A fund’s holdings can be mostly cash while its shares still trade. REX’s IncomeMax fund is one example in these filings.
